The most popular teams in the AFL

For a long time, it was the same few teams dominating the VFL/AFL landscape in terms of popularity, but in recent years things have begun to change. Certain interstate teams have seen huge surges in membership numbers, while the extended success of numerous others has also helped them to draw plenty of fans — so which AFL team has the most supporters?

West Coast Eagles

The Eagles’ sustained success over a number of years has seen their supporter base consistently increase, and in 2020 they sold more memberships than any other team in the AFL for the first time in club history. That number was a huge 100,776, which was more than an 11% increase on the year prior and saw them just creep ahead of the Tigers. This was an incredible achievement in a disrupted season that saw the membership numbers of most clubs drop, often significantly, and is likely a product of the fact that the club has enjoyed six consecutive finals appearances which culminated in two Grand Final appearances and a Premiership.

Richmond Tigers

The Tigers were the sleeping giant of the league for a long time. Historically one of the most popular teams in the AFL, 35 years of poor performance saw their fanbase gradually slip away. The team, of course, has returned with a vengeance by winning three of the last four flags and are one of the favourite AFL Teams to do it again this year, and their fans have come back just as strongly. Richmond sat just behind the Eagles with 100,420 fans in 2020, more than 30,000 more than third-placed Collingwood. Their games are also some of the most attended in the league – back in 2019, the last full season with crowds, an average of 54,011 spectators came to each Richmond game, which was the second-most in the league.

Collingwood Magpies

For as long as most fans care to remember, the Magpies have been the team that gets tongues wagging the most. They are the side that many love to hate, but they also have a huge supporter base that is as passionate as any in the league. Their membership tally was the third biggest in the league in 2020, though it did suffer a significant drop-off of 9.8% on the year prior. Their attendance numbers, however, are always high — in 2019 they topped the league with 57,455 per game, while five games into 2021 they are again sitting on top of that metric.

Due to the fact that it is still uncertain whether people from abroad involved in Formula 1 will be able to enter Japan by the date set for the holding of the F1 Japanese Grand Prix, we have decided that cancellation of the race is unavoidable.

Since the end of last year, we have been preparing for the holding the F1 Japanese Grand Prix together with Formula 1, making decisions in connection with the acceptance of the people involved in this race event coming to Japan from abroad, such as COVID-19 prevention measures, transportation plans, visa applications and the like. In light of the conditions under which the F1 Japanese Grand Prix would have been held this year, these preparations presented a big challenge for us, requiring a great amount of time and work. And the final decision that the event must be cancelled is, thus, all the more unfortunate.

In these unfortunate circumstances, we cannot forget to express our gratitude to all of the organizations involved for their great efforts in making these preparations possible. They include related agencies, authorities and organizations such as the Japan Sports Agency, the Mie Prefectural Government, the City of Suzuka, the National Mie Hospital, and Japan Automobile Federation, as well as the British Embassy, Tokyo, the Jurisdiction Public Health Centers, Chubu Centrair International Airport, Kansai International Airport, Mie Prefectural General Medical Center, Suzuka Chuo General Hospital, Mie University Hospital and all the cooperating companies such as hotels in the Suzuka area.

Arthur Leclerc raced in the European Formula Regional championship for Prema Powerteam last year – finishing second overall, then moved up to Formula 3, sticking with the Italian team. The 20-year-old Monegasque driver currently sits eighth in the drivers’ championship with nine races to go.

Arthur, you scored your maiden pole position, then finished on the podium in race 3. Are you satisfied with the weekend?

All in all, I think it was a good weekend for us. I’m especially happy about the qualifying as it was our weak point at the beginning of the season, but fortunately, we managed to improve our quali pace. We have still lots of work to do but I’m happy with the progress we’ve made. I had a different approach to qualifying this weekend and it seemed to work pretty well as I scored my first pole in F3. I hope we can do the same in Spa after the summer break. The results of races 1 and 2 are a bit of a shame but we also had to take the penalty for the incident I had in the previous round in Austria. Then, race 3 finally went well and we managed to finish on the podium, which is positive.

What are your favourite British Tracks?

I’ve loved getting to know all the legendary British tracks they all have their own unique challenges and permeate this sense of history. My personal favourite is definitely Knockhill but Brands Hatch and Snetterton aren’t far behind.

Avoiding Boots

The most common mistake made by new riders is to purchase equipment like jerseys and pants prior to essential protective gear. We are not against the purchase of motocross-specific pants and jerseys. Safety must be considered first. But there are aspects you must keep in mind too.

Bell & Ross Alpine F1 Team Collection

Racing at the Hungaroring until at least 2037

One of the most important subjects was the Hungarian Minister for Innovation and Technology announcement, Mr Laszlo Palkovics, who confirmed that Hungary would host Formula 1 races until 2037. Moreover, the Hungaroring will undergo extensive refurbishment as the track was initially built back in 1986. The entrance area, the paddock and the grandstands will also be modernised. Mr Palkovics confirmed Hungary’s fierce determination towards Formula 1 in company with President and CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali.

2021 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix highlights

Introduction

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon has claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory in what was, without doubt, one of the most thrilling Hungarian Grands Prix of all time, ahead of Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel – while Lewis Hamilton recovered from being last at one point to claim P3, as Max Verstappen could only take 10th after Lap 1 contact in a crash that triggered a red flag.

A wild and wet start to the Hungarian Grand Prix saw five drivers eliminated on the first lap, as Valtteri Bottas locked up and wiped out Lando Norris and Sergio Perez – as well as hitting Verstappen – while Lance Stroll also locked up and hit Charles Leclerc, who spun around Daniel Ricciardo, with Bottas, Perez, Norris, Stroll and Leclerc all forced into retirement as the race was red-flagged.

Polesitter Hamilton had made it through unscathed, but Mercedes misjudged track conditions at the race restart, keeping Hamilton out for the standing start on intermediates as the entire rest of the field pitted for mediums, Hamilton was forced to pit a lap later and dropping to the back of the pack.

That allowed Ocon to take a lead that he’d hold for almost all the 70 laps at the Hungaroring, holding off the race-long advances of Vettel to take his first single-seater win since 2015, as Vettel secured his second P2 of the season after a fine drive.

Targets in 2021, new rules, his future – just a few of many topics we talked about with the winner of last year’s Italian Grand Prix. The French driver had some tough races recently but looking at the whole picture, that’s a pretty impressive season so far for him and Alpha Tauri.

(function($){ $(window).on("resize", function(){ var sid = "49"; var object = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__img"); var animateThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProAnimateThumb"); var innerThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__thumb"); var parentWidth = "728"; var parentHeight = "90"; var objectWidth = object.width(); if ( objectWidth < parentWidth ) { var scale = objectWidth / parentWidth; if ( objectWidth > 0 && objectWidth != 100 && scale > 0 ) { animateThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); innerThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); object.height(parentHeight * scale); } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } }); $(document).ready(function(){ $(".bsaProItemInner__img").trigger("resize"); }); })(jQuery);

Pierre, we are almost halfway through the season. How could you summarize the first part of F1 2021 from your point of view?

I think it’s been positive, and I’ve never had a stronger start to a season in Formula 1. We managed to take part in several Q3 sessions. We also scored a podium in Baku and collected many points during the first part of the year. Generally, it’s been great, but luck wasn’t always on our side, and there were races where we could’ve done much better. All in all, our target is to clinch fifth in the constructors’ championship. We’ve never finished so high up before, so that’s something I want to achieve this season.

Asprey and Formula 1 come together

Formula 1 has announced a special collection with Asprey, the iconic British luxury goods House, to celebrate the sport’s exciting new era, with a new car and rules and regulations introduced in 2022.

Asprey’s house artisans have crafted the most exalted symbols of achievement in sport – for the Premier League and the UEFA Cup, as well as The Derby Stakes and Wimbledon Championships and other elite sporting events. Now, it is set to celebrate, for posterity, a development which Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile’s Nikolas Tombazis has referred to as “Arguably the most important change in the sport’s history”.

Much like Formula 1, Asprey, which is celebrating its 240th anniversary this year, has a history steeped in innovative design and creation and has long been associated with the world of motorsport, having famously partnered with Ferrari’s F1 team in the late 1990s for a premium collection of silver, gold and leather pieces. Asprey’s remarkable heritage also includes restoring some of the world’s most prestigious sporting trophies.

This new collaboration follows the launch of the new 2022 F1 car, which was unveiled at Silverstone ahead of the 2021 Formula 1 British Grand Prix, as F1 begins the next chapter of its illustrious history. The exclusive collection is inspired by the design of the new 2022 car and includes sterling silver replica and sculptural models in 25cm, 18cm and 10cm sizes, as well as a range of small silver goods and silk products. Fine jewellery items including cufflinks, bracelets, charms, and signet rings are set to launch later in the autumn.
