2021 Formula 1 Power List

The 2021 Formula 1 power List is here.  Paddock magazine presents its tenth 100 Most Influential People in Formula 1 list. It’s our very own annual register of the most powerful people in the industry.

Click here to subscribe to our print edition!

Since 2010 Paddock magazine, Formula 1’s business & lifestyle monthly, had compiled an annual list of the most powerful people in Formula 1. Places are allocated based on the amount of human, managerial and financial resources that they have sway over, as well as their influence on the sport.

To determine the ranking, we considered more than 200 of the most influential players in Formula 1, and we evaluated their influence by using metrics in four major areas: economic power, command, newsworthiness, and impact — a subjective measure that captures how important they are in their respective positions.

We’ve gathered a team of experts of the racing business for this occasion: after a lot of research, the team sent an online survey for motorsport professionals, and then tweaked the final results.

McLaren Racing and Arrow Electronics, the global technology and innovation business, today announced a long-term multi-year partnership extension which will see Arrow continue to support McLaren in its drive to achieve success with the McLaren Formula 1 and Arrow McLaren SP IndyCar teams. The company will continue as title sponsor of Arrow McLaren SP, while it continues as a partner of the McLaren F1 team.

Since 2019, the partnership between Arrow Electronics and McLaren Racing has enabled the two organisations to put a shared belief in technology and innovation at the centre of a joint commitment to drive progress and bring services and solutions to the team and their respective networks.

Today’s news follows the announcement in August that McLaren Racing was acquiring a majority stake in Arrow McLaren SP. Arrow Electronics branding will continue to be represented on the McLaren F1 race cars and drivers, Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, and the Arrow McLaren SP race cars and drivers, Pato O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist.

Video Marketing Strategies & Tips 2021

When it comes to efficient marketing, videos have taken a great leap in recent times. Using smart content is very important to enhance the user experience. We have transitioned from text and image-based content to videos for specific reasons. Videos are far more interactive and engaging than text or images. This article will talk about how you can use the power of video marketing to boost your business in 2021.

Why video marketing?

The audio-video format communicates much more information in a limited time. Therefore, you will find many benefits that you simply cannot imagine with other forms of content. It is often said that one minute of video is worth more than a million words. With this in mind, let’s look at some of the top benefits of video marketing:

Great brand awareness – Using videos can truly enhance engagement for your brand because the audience relates more to audio-visual content. You can communicate your brand ideology more clearly with moving images and relevant voice-overs. This is likely to result in stronger brand recognition.

Enhanced conversions and ROI –  Recent surveys conducted by Wyzowl and marketing brands have confirmed that using videos directly results in enhanced conversions for the brand. It has been observed that almost 75% of audiences buy a product if they see an explainer about it. Smart video maker software and tools have also driven up sales and boosted overall ROI.

Through a hard way you can reach the stars, and that’s what happened to me. I was born in a multi-ethnical-religious country that doesn’t exist anymore called Yugoslavia. And I lived my adolescent life in a state of war much worse than what we experienced during the COVID 19 pandemic. Our country was under sanctions, things disappeared from our grocery stores, but all this built my character today. In the 90s I wasn’t able to travel, I was illegal in Europe and I know how it is to be invisible. So global fame isn’t something important to me, it’s just that I get to meet people from all over the world.

In your opinion, did society become more tolerant?

Tsunoda and Nakagami try their skills at karting

Scuderia AlphaTauri Formula One driver Yuki Tsunoda and LCR Honda IDEMITSU MotoGP rider Takaaki Nakagami have gone head-to-head in a karting challenge ahead of this weekend’s MotoGP event at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in Misano Adriatico, Italy. Here’s everything you need to know:

The event was the first meeting for the Japanese motorsport stars, who both moved from their homeland to Italian shores in search of world championship success. The day also included a tour of the Scuderia AlphaTauri factory, with Tsunoda giving his countryman a rare insight into the world of Formula One.

In the 2021 Formula One season, 21-year-old Tsunoda became the first Japanese driver to score points on his debut and has re-signed to race again with Scuderia AlphaTauri in 2022. Meanwhile, 29-year-old Nakagami is in his fourth MotoGP season and will aim to secure his eighth successive points finish this weekend.

Despite growing up just two hours apart from each other around the Tokyo region in Japan, this was the first meeting between Tsunoda (Kanagawa Prefecture) and Nakagami (Chiba Prefecture).

Hamilton ‘not lucky’ to survive Italian Grand Prix crash

Clive Temple, Motorsport MSc Programme Director and Senior Lecturer at the Advanced Vehicle Engineering Centre at Cranfield University, has commented on the Halo safety device which saved Sir Lewis Hamilton’s life in a crash with Max Verstappen at the Italian Grand Prix last Sunday.

The Halo was tested extensively at Cranfield Impact Centre during its development, overseen by the FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile), prior to its adoption, and the issue of driver protection in motorsport has been investigated in a number of Motorsport MSc projects at Cranfield over the years.

Clive Temple said: “Hamilton was not lucky – it is a fact that engineering and science underpin all of this work which ensures drivers are safe. Safety is the primary concern in motorsport.

“The Halo was introduced in 2018 and proved its worth in that season when Charles Leclerc, who was then driving for Alfa Romeo, was protected from Alonso’s flying McLaren. We also had the Grosjean fireball incident in November 2020 and again the Halo came to the fore there along with other safety measures such as the deformable nose cone protection, in-helmet safety system and the barrier, itself.

Next season I will be embarking on my sixth year in Formula One, alongside my team-mate Sebastian. We started this Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team campaign together and I greatly look forward to continuing the journey with him next year. We have not achieved what we set out to do this year, but that has only amplified our hunger and drive for success next season. Now, with the prestige and support of Aston Martin, and the brilliant new sponsor-partners that such a prestigious brand has attracted, we are well-positioned to improve our performance in 2022.

Designing and building F1 models with… special bricks

Designing and building Formula 1 models with…special bricks. When a game turns into a passion.

Among the special features on display at Minardi Day 2021, which really aroused considerable interest among the fans attending the event, was a wonderful series of Formula 1 models in scale made with LEGO bricks. I immediately noticed the care and precision with which they were made but, above all, the great diversity compared to what is normally found on the market. Curiosity drove me to have a chat with the author: Luca Rusconi founder of the LEGO user group Brianza LUG.

(function($){ $(window).on("resize", function(){ var sid = "49"; var object = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__img"); var animateThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProAnimateThumb"); var innerThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__thumb"); var parentWidth = "728"; var parentHeight = "90"; var objectWidth = object.width(); if ( objectWidth < parentWidth ) { var scale = objectWidth / parentWidth; if ( objectWidth > 0 && objectWidth != 100 && scale > 0 ) { animateThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); innerThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); object.height(parentHeight * scale); } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } }); $(document).ready(function(){ $(".bsaProItemInner__img").trigger("resize"); }); })(jQuery);

Piero Savazzi – Luca good morning, can I ask you a few questions for The Paddock Magazine? Are these official LEGO construction sets?

Luca Rusconi – No, they are personal creations, conceived, designed and built by me, using original pieces, in existing shapes and colours.

Over the past few years, motorsport has seen a great many innovations geared toward improving the industry’s sustainability. The rising popularity of new electric race series, like Formula E and Extreme E, are further driving change. However, investment in new, sustainable technology is not only confined within the industry – we are seeing knowledge transfer from motorsport into a whole host of transport and mobility solutions, from motorcycles, cars and commercial vehicles through to rail and shipping.

(function($){ $(window).on("resize", function(){ var sid = "9"; var object = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__img"); var animateThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProAnimateThumb"); var innerThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__thumb"); var parentWidth = "728"; var parentHeight = "90"; var objectWidth = object.width(); if ( objectWidth < parentWidth ) { var scale = objectWidth / parentWidth; if ( objectWidth > 0 && objectWidth != 100 && scale > 0 ) { animateThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); innerThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); object.height(parentHeight * scale); } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } }); $(document).ready(function(){ $(".bsaProItemInner__img").trigger("resize"); }); })(jQuery);

Now, though, we look to the sky as Italian advanced technology firm, YCOM, sets its sights on a new horizon. YCOM is often referred to as the unseen hand behind many of motorsport’s most advanced and successful programmes. From Volkswagen’s incredible, record-holding I.D. R Pike’s Peak to Audi’s Le Mans-winning prototypes and the exciting forthcoming eSkootr Scooter Championship (eSC), YCOM has become synonymous with challenging projects at the forefront of motorsport and new-age mobility. Now, under the guidance of entrepreneur and founder, Nicola Scimeca, YCOM is taking on an entirely new challenge – personal aviation.

“The aviation industry, like many others, is facing rapid technological change,” explains Scimeca. “Primarily driven by legislators and growing consumer concern about climate change, the commercial sector has really begun to focus on sustainability. While the electric and hybrid technology we see in motorsport cannot directly fulfil the needs of long-haul flights, there are other sectors of aviation where they most certainly can.”

Historic Minardi day 2021… in pictures

It’s about time, finally. Walking in the paddock of the Imola Circuit, and browsing up and down in the pit lane, you could feel the desire of all those present to taste again the typical atmosphere of an event fed by the passion for motorsport. Real passion. The one that makes you love the ‘smell’ of fuel and lubricant. The sound of pneumatic screwdrivers in motion, of tools and the sound of engines warming up. The one that you can see in the eyes of the mechanics, who constantly “take care” and “polish” the cars, for the eyes of the public, but more likely to satisfy their desire.

The fifth edition of the Minardi Day – which I will tell you about in pictures – has, once again, given a lot to the people present, held back in the early hours of Saturday 28 August by bad weather, but who then found in the afternoon and the following Sunday the right setting to express their enthusiasm.

More than 50 years of history in the pits and on the track with cars ranging from the Cooper Maserati T51 of 1959 to the Toro Rosso STR03 with which Sebastian Vettel won his first Grand Prix in 2008, passing through the Minardi F1 PS04 -189 – M192 – M194 – PS04 of Alboreto, Martini, Bruni, Baumgartner and Salal; the Ferraris 312T – 126C4 – 312B2 – 312B3 – 643 chassis 128 – 639 chassis 106 – 412 T1 chassis 154, F93A of Alboreto, Alesi, Ickx and Merzario, Lauda, Regazzoni, Mansell and Berger; the Wolf WR7 of James Hunt; the Arrows A11- A21 – A22 of Verstappen, De La Rosa and Cheever; the Dallara Cosworth 190 of Pirro, De Cesaris and Morbidelli and the 1990 Lola-Alfa Romeo Indy. The list is really long.

The presence and track testing of splendid examples of modern-day technology and design such as the Dallara Stradali and the Pambuffetti prototype also had a strong impact on the public, both in terms of curiosity and imagination.
Many drivers and motorsport personalities made the event even more valuable, including engineer Aldo Costa, Alessandro

2021 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix highlights

Introduction

A dramatic crash between title protagonists Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen that took both drivers out of the race cleared the way for Daniel Ricciardo to claim a sensational victory in the 2021 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, giving McLaren their first race win since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix – and a one-two to boot, as he led home teammate Lando Norris, with Valtteri Bottas taking third, in a thrilling race at Monza.

Hamilton was exiting the pits on Lap 26 of 53 when he arrived alongside Verstappen, the pair going side by side through the Variante del Rettifilo, but making contact, with Verstappen flying through the air and coming to rest on top of the Mercedes. Both drivers were unhurt, but out of the race, with the stewards set to investigate after the 2021 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.

Ricciardo was a deserving winner, however, having passed Verstappen for the lead at the race start from P2 on the grid, before Verstappen and Hamilton’s clash cleared the way for him to control the race to sweep home to an eighth career victory. Lando Norris secured his best ever race finish with P2, having been told to hold station behind his teammate in the final moments of the Grand Prix.

Nicholas remains at the team for a fourth consecutive season, his third as a race driver, whilst Alex returns to the Formula One grid having spent a year as Red Bull Racing Honda’s Test & Reserve Driver and a race-winning campaign in the DTM. The 25-year-old previously drove for Scuderia Toro Rosso in F1 before being promoted to a race seat with Red Bull Racing, scoring two podiums in 2020.

Jost Capito, CEO of Williams Racing, added:

It is fantastic to be able to confirm our driver line-up for 2022 and I am delighted to be welcoming Alex to the team, along with confirming our continued relationship with Nicholas into next year. We are extremely excited by our new line-up, with both drivers bringing a great blend of youth and experience that will not only be a great fit for the team but also help us take the next step in our journey.

Alex is one of the most exciting young talents in motorsport, yet comes with a large amount of F1 experience from his time at Red Bull. His multiple podium finishes highlight his speed as a driver, and we know he will immediately feel at home with the team at Grove. Nicholas meanwhile has consistently impressed us over the past three years with his hard work, diligence, and positive attitude. He has continued to develop throughout his time at Williams and has grown into an impressive F1 driver, as seen by his points-scoring finishes this season.

#ShapeAnotherFuture: Ferrari fans imagine the future

#ShapeAnotherFuture! As usual, the Italian Grand Prix signals the return of top-level sport in Italy after the summer break. In 2021, fans will be back in the grandstands at the Monza circuit and in some ways, the event is a big restarting point for the country as a whole, also surfing the wave of Italian sporting success in the football Euro competition, the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics and in European women’s volleyball.

The idea. To take a slightly different view of what is such a special event for its fans from all around the world, Scuderia Ferrari has decided to involve them in using their creativity to come up with an alternative vision of the future. Hence the initiative, #ShapeAnotherFuture and one of its most important moments will be this coming weekend at Monza.

Symbols for a different future. From 6 to 23 August, via social media, Scuderia Ferrari has asked its fans to come up with a graphic representation of the future as they imagine it, using a kit of symbols given to them. They could then express themselves freely within a series of guidelines provided. All the artworks were analysed in Maranello by a panel of artists and the ten most interesting ones that matched the guidelines were selected and printed in large format. They were then submitted to the illustrator, Alberto Dal Lago, who was also the creator of the Scuderia Ferrari cover art for the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, taking his inspiration from these artworks in producing an illustration that incorporates all the ideas from the fans.

Where to see the artwork. Dal Lago’s illustration, along with those of the ten fans will be on display in the Monza Paddock Club, the most exclusive area at the circuit, from which guests can enjoy a really special Grand Prix experience. They will also be on display at the Ferrari Maranello Museum, as part of the “The Meaning of a Partnership” exhibition, which runs up until 19 September. On Friday, Alberto Dal Lago will be at the Museum to talk to visitors. The #ShapeAnotherFuture initiative will also feature as a special sticker on the SF21s driven by Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

In ‘Ciao Palermo, Monza is calling’, the road trip pays homage to one of Italy’s most evocative and vibrant cities by starting at Palermo’s oldest and most famous Ballarò street market.

The RB7 then powers through the picturesque city’s narrow laneways before hitting the wider grand boulevards, including the Via Vittorio Emanuele, which cuts through the historic centre.
