Max Verstappen won a heavily rain-shortened 2021 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix that finished late into the evening amid torrential conditions at Spa-Francorchamps. Half points were awarded as more than two laps – but less than 75% of the race – were completed.
The 1500 scheduled start time came 30 minutes after Sergio Perez crashed on the way to his grid spot in the wet weather, with the rain showing no signs of relenting. After a 25 minute delay, a brace of formation laps behind the Safety Car followed, before Race Director Michael Masi threw the red flag.
After many more delays, the race finally resumed at 1817 local time – more than three hours after it was set to start – with the clock to tick down from one hour as Masi did everything in his control to try to get a race up and running.
Many years have passed since the Formula 1 community hoped for an exciting and tight season. It has arrived this year. Tyres blowing up in Azerbaijan, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton fighting wheel-to-wheel, Valtteri Bottas bowling his rivals, Esteban Ocon winning his first Grand Prix… The season has had all the ingredients to serve a delicious hot meal though it got cold under the Belgian sky.

There is no doubt the situation was tricky for both the drivers and the organisation. People at the pinnacle of motorsport must have an ability to react and, therefore, give solutions or alternatives to its stakeholders and fans. That hardly happened during the Belgian GP, and such circumstance is simply unacceptable. There were thousands of fans soaked and cold but also televisions and media had to reschedule their broadcasting with little or no information, not to mention the mayhem it caused to the teams.
There was such a level of confusion that for a moment Red Bull was not sure if they could take out Checo Pérez car (not even the stewards knew it at first). It’s also worthwhile pointing out the havoc regarding the duration of the race, the sudden stop of the clock, or the maths to count the number of laps completed from the start to the end.
Sergio Perez re-signed contract extension with Red Bull Racing Honda for the 2022 Formula 1 season. Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez joined Red Bull Racing Honda for the 2021 season and was immediately impressed after qualifying on the front row in only his second race for the Team at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

“It’s always good to be racing at Spa and this weekend also marks a special moment for us, as Sunday’s race will be Honda’s 50th in partnership with Red Bull Racing. In a short space of time, we have achieved some great results in this hybrid era, such as our first win in Austria in 2019 and first pole in Hungary that same year, as well as our first double podium with Red Bull in Bahrain 2020 and, most recently, the fact we have taken five consecutive wins so far this year.
Honda had been back in Formula 1 for four years before joining up with Red Bull and we had not even scored a podium finish, so we have come a long way to be now fighting for the championship together with Red Bull. This is down to a lot of hard work and excellent communication from everyone at Honda and Red Bull. On the eve of our 50th race, I want to thank Red Bull Racing for their open and fair approach and the trust they showed in us, sharing the same goal. In addition, we must not forget the contribution from the drivers in that time.
For a long time, it was the same few teams dominating the VFL/AFL landscape in terms of popularity, but in recent years things have begun to change. Certain interstate teams have seen huge surges in membership numbers, while the extended success of numerous others has also helped them to draw plenty of fans — so which AFL team has the most supporters?

The Eagles’ sustained success over a number of years has seen their supporter base consistently increase, and in 2020 they sold more memberships than any other team in the AFL for the first time in club history. That number was a huge 100,776, which was more than an 11% increase on the year prior and saw them just creep ahead of the Tigers. This was an incredible achievement in a disrupted season that saw the membership numbers of most clubs drop, often significantly, and is likely a product of the fact that the club has enjoyed six consecutive finals appearances which culminated in two Grand Final appearances and a Premiership.
The Tigers were the sleeping giant of the league for a long time. Historically one of the most popular teams in the AFL, 35 years of poor performance saw their fanbase gradually slip away. The team, of course, has returned with a vengeance by winning three of the last four flags and are one of the favourite AFL Teams to do it again this year, and their fans have come back just as strongly. Richmond sat just behind the Eagles with 100,420 fans in 2020, more than 30,000 more than third-placed Collingwood. Their games are also some of the most attended in the league – back in 2019, the last full season with crowds, an average of 54,011 spectators came to each Richmond game, which was the second-most in the league.
For as long as most fans care to remember, the Magpies have been the team that gets tongues wagging the most. They are the side that many love to hate, but they also have a huge supporter base that is as passionate as any in the league. Their membership tally was the third biggest in the league in 2020, though it did suffer a significant drop-off of 9.8% on the year prior. Their attendance numbers, however, are always high — in 2019 they topped the league with 57,455 per game, while five games into 2021 they are again sitting on top of that metric.

Since the end of last year, we have been preparing for the holding the F1 Japanese Grand Prix together with Formula 1, making decisions in connection with the acceptance of the people involved in this race event coming to Japan from abroad, such as COVID-19 prevention measures, transportation plans, visa applications and the like. In light of the conditions under which the F1 Japanese Grand Prix would have been held this year, these preparations presented a big challenge for us, requiring a great amount of time and work. And the final decision that the event must be cancelled is, thus, all the more unfortunate.
In these unfortunate circumstances, we cannot forget to express our gratitude to all of the organizations involved for their great efforts in making these preparations possible. They include related agencies, authorities and organizations such as the Japan Sports Agency, the Mie Prefectural Government, the City of Suzuka, the National Mie Hospital, and Japan Automobile Federation, as well as the British Embassy, Tokyo, the Jurisdiction Public Health Centers, Chubu Centrair International Airport, Kansai International Airport, Mie Prefectural General Medical Center, Suzuka Chuo General Hospital, Mie University Hospital and all the cooperating companies such as hotels in the Suzuka area.

Arthur Leclerc raced in the European Formula Regional championship for Prema Powerteam last year – finishing second overall, then moved up to Formula 3, sticking with the Italian team. The 20-year-old Monegasque driver currently sits eighth in the drivers’ championship with nine races to go.

All in all, I think it was a good weekend for us. I’m especially happy about the qualifying as it was our weak point at the beginning of the season, but fortunately, we managed to improve our quali pace. We have still lots of work to do but I’m happy with the progress we’ve made. I had a different approach to qualifying this weekend and it seemed to work pretty well as I scored my first pole in F3. I hope we can do the same in Spa after the summer break. The results of races 1 and 2 are a bit of a shame but we also had to take the penalty for the incident I had in the previous round in Austria. Then, race 3 finally went well and we managed to finish on the podium, which is positive.

The pioneering watchmaker has thus also become a vital player at Formula 1 circuits. Since 2016, Bell & Ross has been associated with the Renault F1 Team. To celebrate the arrival of the Alpine brand at this year’s Grand Prix races, the team has been renamed, Alpine F1 Team. And Bell & Ross has become its official timekeeping partner.
To celebrate this continued partnership the Franco-Swiss company has launched the Bell & Ross Alpine F1 Team watch collection, inspired by the world of Formula 1. This sixth family of exceptional timepieces includes three ultra-sporty chronographs.
Since it first opened its doors in 1994, the watchmaker Bell & Ross has displayed a keen passion for the world of aviation. Its watches are inspired by the cockpit instrumentation of a jet fighter. To refresh its inspiration, the company has also explored other domains, including motor racing.
