W14 challenger is introduced by the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team

A new season, new challenges, and a new car. Today, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team unveils its 2023 contender, the Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance.

Forged in the learnings of a difficult 2022, the W14 is striking in its appearance. The underlying concept of the W13 has been retained, and development has focused on core performance areas. That has led to a car that keeps the distinctive DNA of its predecessor and introduces a combination of notable changes visible on first inspection – such as the gulley bodywork on the engine cover – and others beneath the surface.

The car’s arresting look isn’t limited to the architecture, either. As part of a big project to make the car lighter overall, the iconic black paint job from 2020 to 2021 has been improved. Driving the W14 will be Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who line up for their second season together, supported by Mick Schumacher in his role as third driver.

“Our hopes and expectations are always to be capable of fighting for a World Championship. However, our competitors were solid last year, and we are playing catch-up,” said Team Principal & CEO of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, Toto Wolff. “Racing at the front requires resilience, teamwork, and determination. We face up to every challenge, we put the Team first, and we will leave no stone unturned in the chase for every millisecond. This year, we are all in to get back in front.”

SF-23 is launched by Scuderia Ferrari at the Fiorano track

It was a St. Valentine’s Day to remember for Scuderia Ferrari fans worldwide. At around lunchtime, the SF-23, the Maranello marque’s challenger for the coming Formula 1 season, was unveiled at the company’s Fiorano track. It is the 69th car built by Ferrari to compete in motor racing’s blue riband category, which starts with the Bahrain Grand Prix on 5 March.

Fans in the stands. The day was full of surprises, starting with the presence of 500 fans in a grandstand specially erected at the Fiorano track, making this the first actual launch to be staged after two years of virtual car presentations. Before the launch, the drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz greeted the crowd, including many members of the various Scuderia Ferrari Clubs and students from Muner, the Motorvehicle University of Emilia-Romagna, and some from the Alfredo Ferrari Higher Education Institute, along with their teachers.

Car on track. The SF-23, whose name marks a return to the format of the Scuderia Ferrari initials combined with the year of competition, as has been the case for most of the hybrid era, was first seen on video. But then came the announcement that, for the first time since 2017, the car would actually take to the track on launch day. Which of the two drivers would get behind the wheel first was decided by Fred Vasseur tossing a special coin, with Leclerc’s and Sainz’s race numbers- 16 and 55 – one on each side. Charles won and drove the SF-23 for its first couple of laps, while Carlos got his turn shortly afterwards.

Special livery. The SF-23 livery features some parts in naked carbon, while the historic “long F” logo appears on the rear wing. The red colour is also brand new, created by Ferrari Design: a matt version of the Formula 1 car, and glossy on the 499P Hypercar, which makes its endurance racing debut this year.

Remembering Ferrari’s last World Driver’s Champion

The 2023 Formula One World Championship is just a number of weeks away, and excitement has already reached a fever pitch. The new campaign gets underway on March 5th in Bahrain, the circuit which saw Ferrari pick up their first one-two finish since the Singapore Grand Prix in 2019. And they are amongst the favourites for victory again this term.

Fans of the sport will also be hoping to see a bounce back from Mercedes next season. At the beginning of the season, the Silver Arrows were one second per lap off the pace of the leading Red Bulls and Ferraris, and although they narrowed that gap somewhat as the season progressed, they were still a distant third-best.

Also, the 2022 campaign was the first season in Lewis Hamilton’s illustrious career where he didn’t pick up at least one win, and his fans will be hoping to see him return to the title fight next season.

One man was head and shoulders above the rest last year, and that was Max Verstappen. The Flying Dutchman enjoyed a record-breaking campaign and romped to a second consecutive World Championship. Online sportsbook Bodog, which provides F1 betting and outrights, as well as famous casino games like Bodog’s Blackjack, have made ‘Super Max’ the odds-on favourite to make it three titles on the spin this term.

Last season, Ferrari was expected to take the fight to Verstappen and his Red Bull team; however, a number of poor decisions from the pit wall cost lead driver Charles Leclerc a number of victories. As such, the 2023 season marks 15 years since one of their drivers last won the World Championship. Let’s turn the clock back to that championship victory in 2017.

Lawrence Stroll, AMF1 Executive Chairman, said:

This year’s move into our new state-of-the-art factory is more than just a serious statement of intent: it will considerably strengthen and empower every single individual in this organisation, helping us to deliver on our ambition to narrow the gap to the front of the grid and, in time, become genuine championship frontrunners.

Remembering the failed Grand Prix of America

The Grand Prix of America is a Formula 1 race that was set to take place in New Jersey in 2013. Unfortunately, the plans fell through, and the race was abandoned.

The first event of the Grand Prix of America was supposed to occur on June 16, 2013. It never came to fruition. By late 2013, Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One President and CEO, stated that promoters were in breach of contract. New proposals were welcome, and New Jersey was out of the running.

Reportedly, the event organizers in NJ did not comply with the terms and conditions of the race contract. Long-term financial problems were also reportedly to blame.

Fast forward almost a decade, and the city of Las Vegas is preparing to host its own Formula 1 race.

This will happen on November 16-18. The race, which will take place on Las Vegas Strip, expects an influx of traffic for the first-ever Las Vegas Grand Prix. The 3.8-mile track will offer a lovely view of famous landmarks, casinos, and hotels as drivers fly past round by round in the hopes of earning the win

Scuderia AlphaTauri kickstarts their 2023 Formula One season with rookie Nyck De Vries, 28, joining the driver roster alongside Tsunoda. De Vries becomes the second Dutch driver on the grid alongside two-time world champion Max Verstappen.

The Dutchman already has considerable experience, earning his F1 seat off the back of winning the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Formula Renault 2.0 Alps, FIA Formula 2 Championship and Formula E titles. He then claimed an impressive ninth on his F1 debut last September in his first race start with Williams Racing, substituting for a sidelined Alex Albon at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix.

De Vries said: “I’ve loved attending my first event as a Scuderia AlphaTauri driver. The opportunity to represent the brand at New York Fashion Week has been extremely special for me and really showed me what the brand is about. The AT04 livery looks great, and you can see how the sleek A/W collection has inspired it, so I can’t wait to see it on track.”
