Ushijima wins again in British F3 Race 2 at Silverstone

Reece Ushijima became the first double-winner of the 2021 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship season on Sunday, winning Race 2 at Silverstone for Hitech GP.

Zak O’Sullivan tailed him home a second behind, with Roberto Faria taking third place and his first podium of the season.

Saturday’s Race 1 winner started from pole position for the second race in a row, courtesy of his second-fastest time in Qualifying.

Ayrton Simmons suffered a five-place grid penalty after his collision with Bart Horsten at Brands Hatch, placing him down the order on Sunday morning.

Zak O’Sullivan moved past Frederick Lubin into Copse to go into second place, with Roberto Faria also making moves.

Faria overtook Lubin into Vale, while Javier Sagrera moved past Lubin’s Arden Motorsport team-mate Alex Connor at the same place.

Horsten made up four places in the opening exchanges, moving up to P11.

Lubin moved back past Christian Mansell into Copse on Lap 2, after being squeezed wide by Carlin‘s Australian driver.

Hitech GP‘s Sebastian Alvarez found a way around Dexter Patterson (Douglas Motorsport) around Brooklands and Luffield, as his team-mate Horsten continued to progress into the top ten.

Patterson wouldn’t be denied for long, though, and sent one to the inside at the Loop. Both he and Alvarez lost time, with Bryce Aron challenging Patterson into Brooklands.

The pair battled towards the end of the lap, and made contact with Patterson losing his front wing at Luffield.

Max Marzorati went past Mikkel Grundtvig into P14 into Copse, with his Chris Dittmann Racing team-mate Simmons profiting from the battles ahead to move into tenth.

Lubin factored himself back into proceedings just past the halfway point of the race, setting the fastest lap in fourth place.

Mansell was defending from Javier Sagrera into Abbey and Farm, but it was Alex Connor who pounced on the Spanish driver into The Loop.

That sent Sagrera wide, and team-mate Tom Lebbon moved through at Aintree. The resurgent Bart Horsten continued his recovery drive by getting past Sagrera around the outside at Brooklands to go eighth.

Sebastian Alvarez received a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits while scrapping with Ayrton Simmons, who received a warning for a similar indiscretion.

Javier Sagrera moved past Mansell into Farm, which slowed the Australian down and gave his compatriot Horsten an opportunity to go around the outside again into The Loop.

Ushijima held on to take his second win of the season and become the first double-winner after five races, with O’Sullivan second and Faria rounding out the podium.

Frederick Lubin just missed out on a first podium in British F3, less than two tenths behind Fortec Motorsport‘s Brazilian driver.

Javier Sagrera, Bart Horsten, Christian Mansell, Tom Lebbon and Alex Connor finished line astern from fifth down to ninth, with Ayrton Simmons leading Bryce Aron in tenth and 11th.

Sebastian Alvarez and Max Marzorati were almost inseparable after the Mexican driver’s five-second penalty, but the Hitech man just pipped Marzorati for 12th.

Grundtvig, José Garfias and Reema Juffali were just a couple of seconds away.

Dexter Patterson had to box for a new front wing after his incident with Aron, which saw him finish 17th.

The reverse-grid Race 3 will get underway at 4:15pm, and you can follow all the action on The Checkered Flag.
