Eryk Goczal finally a Challenger winner with Aragon victory

After a frustrating ten months, Eryk Goczał is finally atop a Challenger podium after dominating the Baja España Aragón in Spain.

Goczał set the fastest time among the fifty-seven Challenger entries across the Prologue and both timed stages, good for fourth overall in FIA World Baja Cup behind a trio of Ultimate cars. This sweep came despite some of the most stacked competition he’s faced to date that included 2023 FIA European Baja Cup class vice champion Ghislain de Mévius and the great Nasser Al-Attiyah, the latter running his maiden Challenger race and the thrice defending Baja Aragón outright winner.

The 2023 Dakar Rally SSV winner, Goczał graduated to Challenger ahead of the 2024 edition, winning a stage in his class début at the Rallye du Maroc before retiring with a mechanical failure the next day and being reprimanded for violating Moroccan law regarding starting a fire for help. He then dominated the first half of the 2024 Dakar before being disqualified midway for a noncompliant clutch. That was his last race to date before Aragón.

“In Baja Aragon I wanted to race against the best – especially the one best… and we did it,” wrote Goczał. “We defeated Nasser Al-Attiyah and I’m proud of it. These results show that step by step we are doing better and better and we are getting closer to fulfilling our dream, i.e. to the top class – T1. We still have a lot of work to do, we know where to improve, so we are already starting preparations for the next starts.”

While he came up short, de Mévius’ brother Guillaume de Mévius won the race in the FIA World Baja Cup ahead of Rokas Baciuška. It was Guillaume’s first Aragón win but the sixth for his new navigator Mathieu Baumel, who won his first five with Al-Attiyah. Baciuška, the World Rally-Raid Championship’s Challenger points leader, was running his third Baja in Ultimate with plans of moving up to the category full time in 2025.

João Ferreira beat Nani Roma for third in FIA; Roma was racing a Ford Ranger for Past-Racing in relief duty of the injured Daniel Alonso, and his fourth was good to win the Spanish Cross-Country Rally Championship points-paying side. Yazeed Al-Rajhi probably could have completed a Toyota Hilux podium sweep with de Mévius and Baciuška if not for a broken bolt in the lower A-arm during the first leg.

The weekend began on a rather inauspicious note for many Challenger and SSV drivers, who received €500 fines stemming from homologation violations during pre-race scrutineering in Teruel. Florent Tafani and Victor Verdú did not have FIA Technical Passport stickers on their cars, which were rebuilt prior to the event and the team forgot to re-add them, while 2024 Dakar SSV runner-up Jérôme de Sadeleer failed to present his roll cage homologation certificate. Pau Navarro‘s Yamaha arrived at inspections late though the FIA permitted a waiver.

Yasir Seaidan, a last-minute addition to the grid in his first Challenger start, and co-driver Omar Allahim were jointly docked €1,000 when Allahim accidentally pressed the switch to ask for medical assistance when their car suffered a flat tyre during SS1. Claude Fournier was penalised fifteen minutes the same stage after ignoring an overtake request from Andrea Succi, which Fournier and Serge Gounon explained was due to misunderstanding the data given on their Stella device. While Fournier’s penalty was officially for impeding Succi, the latter was disqualified anyway after receiving assistance from an unknown person.

Even de Mévius was not safe from the FIA’s wrath, being fined €8,000 (half suspended barring no repeeats) because two of his rims were below the mandated weight of twelve kilograms by .022 kg.

T3.U, a new subcategory of Challenger for electric and hybrid cars, made its début with Apache Automotive‘s trio of rally drivers Pierre-Louis Loubet, Charles Munster, and Julien Saunier. Munster, a newcomer to cross-country rally, finished the best of the trio with a twenty-ninth in Challenger after battling brake issues. Loubet withdrew before the last stage in order to make the trip to Finland for the World Rally Championship-2’s Rally Finland.

Portuguese cross-country star Gonçalo Guerreiro won in SSV. Christine GZ, who has been dabbling in rally raid again in recent years, was fifth. Former Moto2 rider Carlos Tatay narrowly missed out on an SSV top ten in his second rally.

Baumel was not the only repeat winner in Aragón as Tosha Schareina notched his third in a row on a bike among FIM Bajas World Cup entrants. Edgar Canet and Lorenzo Santolino rounded out the order, with Neels Theric narrowly missing out on scoring Kove Moto’s first FIM Bajas podium in fourth. Dakar Rally2 winner Harith Noah suffered a technical problem on the Prologue while his GPS malfunctioned on the last leg, but he fought his way to a seventh.

Schareina’s FIM E-xplorer World Cup team-mate Aishwarya Pissay finished second in the Women Trophy battle.

The new Trail category was a duel of Aprilia Tuareg 660s in the marque’s first time at Baja Aragón. Jacopo Cerruti, winner of the Africa Eco Race in January, overcame a crash on the second day to win ahead of Francesco Montanari. Although not grouped with the 450cc categories, Cerruti’s time would have ranked him eleventh overall.

“The rally was extremely physical in spite of being short, and it was also complicated because the cars went ahead of us on both Saturday and Sunday, making the terrain truly difficult,” commented Cerruti. “I am extremely satisfied and pleased with the way the bike performed.”

Adventure bikes and those over the traditional FIM 450cc also starred on the Spanish Open side in the Trail and MaxiTrail classes. Joan Pedrero‘s Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 topped MaxiTrail ahead of Jordi Quer Molgó‘s KTM 890 Adventure R, while Cristian España Muñoz won Trail on a 500cc Sherco SEF Factory over the KTM 690 Enduro R of Sergi Sangra Lluch. Pedrero also claimed the Open Veteran Trophy for those over forty-five.

Other bikes in Trail included the KTM 500 EXC-F and Husqvarna FE 501. MaxiTrail also featured a 1290cc KTM Super Adventure R (fifth with Ignacio Sanchis Utrabo and eighth with Daniel Albero Puig), a Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré (Alberto Yañez García, sixth), and a BMW F 850 GS (Fernando Paz Salinas, seventh).

“Congratulations to Joan and the entire team for this incredible achievement,” said Kolja Rebstock, the regional vice president of Europe, Middle East, and Africa for Harley-Davidson. “The fortieth edition of the prestigious Baja Aragón marks a historic milestone and allows us to once again demonstrate that the Pan America delivers unmatched results both on- and off-road.”

Aragón was the third round of the 2024 FIA World Baja Cup and FIM Bajas World Cup.
