Episode 351

February 21, 2021

First and possibly the only snowmobile race in 2021 coming to the County

Matt McEwen, McEwen Construction, from Linneus, doing some of the preliminary work needed to host what could be the only cross-country snowmobile race in Aroostook County in 2021. The so-called “Heartbeats and Handlebars” Vintage, Trail, and Kids endurance races will be held at Houlton Community Park. (Tame the Track Tour photo)

The snowmobile racing track is being groomed in Houlton for the only scheduled snowmobile races in Aroostook County in the winter of 2021. Racers are preparing their sleds which for the most part have sat idle since late winter 2020 when COVID-19 wiped out the end of Tame the Track Tour Snowmobile Racing schedule.

It’s Daytona baby!

At HTF Motorsports World Headquarters, computer in hand, UpNorth Motorsports in cue and the Daytona 500 on Fox. Little did I know that a six-hour weather delay would mean another late night. (HTF Motorsports photo)

Happy Valentine’s Day. It happened again, lap 14 wreck took my picks out of the picture. My #1 pick, Ryan Blaney, is out of the race. My # 2 pick, Martin Truex, Jr. was able to continue many laps off the lead.

Daytona frontstretch focal point

Frontstretch logo and turf design is the choice of fans in fall of 2020 for 2021 Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway. The dark and light colors are mixtures of different ryegrass seed. ( Photo used with permission of Grassroots Motorsports Magazine)

As you step into the stadium at Daytona International Speedway and gather your first view of what arguably is the most famous race track in the world, your eye is drawn to the lush green grass and logo that makes up the inside of the frontstretch. That design is fan selected and grown into reality by Aroostook County native Jason Griffeth and his dedicated team of groundskeepers.

Ford Woodie saved from scrapyard Part II

From rusting hulk to show stopper

A rusted hulk graced the feature photo section of the last episode making one think, “No way that can be rescued!”. If I had not seen the finished product before viewing the project history photos, I too would have said those same words.

In Episode 347 we got a glimpse of the backstory behind the 1940 Ford Woodie that Presque Isle’s Greg Roderick lovingly worked his bodywork magic on. We left the story with insight into the acquisition of parts from three different 1940 Woodies which yielded enough parts to make one.

The Roderick Woodie story

Discovery is a big reason to write each episode of UpNorth Motorsports. Rarely does a week go by that I do not learn something interesting about this vast field of motorsports. This past week, I began another journey down the path of car collecting and restoration.

Entering Presque Isle, Maine from the south on Route 1, you will notice a neat three-bay garage adorned with antique gas pumps and fuel station signs from yesteryear.  For years I drove by that place when heading south or coming home. After visiting with owner Greg Roderick I learned that this is the place from which the “magic” emanates.
